IS COFFEE REALLY A BEAN?

Actually, coffee is made from the roasted seed of the coffee cherry fruit. The whole business

needs to put up its hands and own up to this widespread misperception. Not all seeds

are beans, but all coffee "beans" are, and surprise! For as long as anybody can remember,

we've all been saying the wrong thing! Coffee is not physiologically a bean; rather, it

is a seed that grows within a fruit on a tree. Coffee plants were never beans since they belong to a different family,

Leguminosae. However, for the sake of general usage, we may all be technically incorrect and still refer to them as beans.
